“For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of His saints.” - Proverbs 2:6-8
Did you know that there is a difference between being smart and being wise? So much of our world has become systemized and professionalized that many of us mistakenly think that we gain wisdom from the things of this world. The truth is, however, that wisdom cannot be purchased with tuition fees or gained through educational classes. Knowledge can certainly be gained this way – but not necessarily wisdom. Wisdom is gained through a daily, lifelong process of growth.
Why is wisdom so valuable, and how do we attain wisdom?
Proverbs 16:16 says, “How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.” Why is wisdom described as so valuable? We all have a deep longing to be happy. That is not a bad thing. In fact, God created that longing within us. But without the wisdom to seek this happiness in God, we will find whatever substitutes we can in the world. There are countless places people seek happiness apart from God, and the results are disastrous. Nothing apart from God gives complete and eternal satisfaction. Therefore, gaining wisdom is more valuable than anything money can buy, because wisdom will always point us to Jesus.
Proverbs 2:6-8 tells us that wisdom comes not from the world, but straight from God. So how can we get this wisdom from God? First, we must value it enough to seek it. “Seek it like silver, and search for it as for hidden treasure,” (Proverbs 2:4). And where do we seek it? “…The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple,” (Psalm 19:7b). Wisdom is found in the Word of God; therefore we cannot gain wisdom apart from it. We must also ask God for wisdom, just like King Solomon did. Bible study and prayer are two of the best ways to seek wisdom.
Finally, and most importantly, we must come to Christ. There is nothing we can do in our own strength to gain wisdom. It is the supernatural gift of God. Colossians 2:3 tells us that in Jesus “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” God generously grants us wisdom through a personal relationship with His Son. And what could be more valuable than that?
Father, I humbly ask that You would give me the gift of wisdom. Help me to recognize its value and to seek You with all of my heart. In Jesus’ name, amen.
