“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10
Who am I and how did I get here? Even though this is a deep question there can only be two relatively simple answers. Either God purposely made me to be here, or I just accidentally made it here. In other words, either I am here by chance or I am here by divine design.
As you ponder the questions, “Who am I and how did I get here?” and “How did the world get here?” please consider ten simple words. They are perhaps some of the most well known words in the English language. They are also the first words found in the first chapter of the first book of the Bible. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1).”
I ask you to consider these ten words because they are the entry point to understanding not only how you got here, but why. Elohim – Creator God – made this beautiful world and all who inhabit it for one purpose – to display His glory. He is glorified in the sunrises and sunsets, in the deep oceans and highest mountains, and in the arid deserts and tropical rain forests. His glory is evident in the largest of whales and the smallest of atoms, in the roar of the lion and the metamorphosis of a butterfly. His majesty is on display in the songs of birds and the spots of leopards, in the croaks of frogs and the stripes of zebras. God’s glory is everywhere.
Wherever you look, you can see the work of His hands. But nowhere is it more evident than in your own reflection. You are His handiwork. Your life’s purpose is found in His Son, Jesus. No matter how you feel about yourself, or what you have been told about yourself, God made you in His image. Unfortunately, sin has marred that perfect image in all of us; but Jesus has made a way for restoration through His sacrifice on the cross.
We all have questions about who we are and why we are here. God has answered every question in His Son, Jesus.
Dear Lord, I know you created me on purpose and for a purpose. I want to be confident in that truth and to always remember that my identity and who I am is rooted in you. Please continue to remind me of that. In Jesus' name, amen.
