When Doubt Knocks

March 31, 2025

"Then the woman said to Elijah, 'Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.'"
1 Kings 17:24 (NIV)

Have you ever found yourself questioning God's goodness in the middle of life's hardest moments?

Maybe you've whispered, "God, where are you?" or "God, do you really care?"

If you've been there, you're in great company. Some of the greatest people in the Bible experienced doubt. Job questioned God openly. David cried out in the Psalms. Even Elijah, that mighty prophet, struggled with doubt.

In 1 Kings 17, when the widow's son died, both she and Elijah questioned God's purposes. The widow asked, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?" (v.18). Elijah echoed her sentiment: "Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?" (v.20).

Their doubt wasn't a sign of weak faith but of honest faith. It's in these moments of questioning that God often reveals Himself most powerfully. When Elijah cried out to God and stretched himself over the boy three times, God responded with a miracle so profound that it transformed the widow's doubt into faith, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth" (v.24).

What God did for her, He can do for you. Your doubts don't disqualify you from His love or intervention. Instead, they can be the very pathway to deeper faith and greater revelation of who God is.

When doubt knocks at your door today, don't hide it or ignore it. Take it to God honestly. Pour out your heart to Him. Then watch for how He might use your uncertainty as a doorway to deeper faith.

Prayer: Father, Thank You that You're not threatened by my honest questions. When doubt knocks at my door, help me bring it straight to You rather than hiding in shame. Use my questions to draw me closer to Your heart, and reveal Yourself to me in ways that transform my uncertainty into unshakable faith. In the mighty Name of Jesus, Amen.
