What Is Love?

…that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God. – 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5

In a world consumed by fleeting desires and instant gratification, the distinction between love and lust can become blurred. Yet, as followers of Christ, we are called to embrace a higher standard – one that reflects God's heart for pure and selfless affection. In 1 Thessalonians 4:4-5, the apostle Paul draws a clear line between the two, shedding light on the importance of understanding their differences.

Love is a divine virtue, rooted in selflessness and genuine care for others. When we love, we seek the well-being and happiness of those we hold dear. It is a commitment that goes beyond physical attraction and emotional infatuation. Love, as demonstrated by Christ's sacrificial act on the cross, calls us to put others before ourselves, to serve, and to build meaningful connections based on trust and respect.

On the other hand, lust is a distorted version of love that seeks instant gratification without regard for consequences or the well-being of others. It is driven by passionate desires and cravings, often leading to selfish actions that can harm ourselves and those involved. Lust objectifies people, reducing them to mere tools of pleasure, devoid of the respect and honor they deserve as God's creation.

As believers, we are called to control our bodies and our desires, living in a way that is holy and honorable before God and others. This requires discernment and a willingness to surrender our passions to God's guidance. By seeking His wisdom, we can nurture love in our hearts, focusing on building lasting, meaningful relationships based on His principles.

Dear Lord, forgive me for the times I have succumbed to lustful thoughts and actions, and cleanse my heart from any impurity. Teach me to walk in Your ways, upholding holiness and honor in my relationships. Help me to cultivate genuine love that flows from Your heart – a love that seeks to honor and cherish others, putting their needs before my own. Help me to choose love over lust whenever I’m given the chance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
