“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” - Psalm 73:26
There is a “Too Big to Fail” theory that asserts that certain corporations, especially if they are financial in nature, are so vital to the economy of our Nation that they cannot be allowed to fail – even if it takes governmental intervention to keep them from doing so. They are considered too big to fail. Tell that to Lehman Brothers, the fourth-largest investment bank in the United States until, on September 15, 2008, it filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. It was the largest bankruptcy filing in US history and led to a global financial meltdown that we all experienced thereafter. So much for too big to fail.
Too big to fail – tell that to the giant Goliath. Too big to fail – tell that to Old Testament Israel, the people God personally chose for Himself. Too big to fail – tell that to the Roman Empire. Too big to fail – tell that to Nazi Germany or the Soviet Union. The truth is there is nothing or no one too big to fail except God, who created everything. With anything and everything else the saying is true, “The bigger they are, the harder they fall.”
We can all fail, and fail miserably. We can all fall, and fall hard. That is true of corporations and nations. This is true of kings and queens. This is true of millionaires and billionaires. It is why we are in need of the greatest gift God has to offer us – His grace through Jesus Christ.
God’s grace not only saves us for eternity, it sustains us today. His grace fills every nook and cranny of our lives, giving us the strength to persevere joyfully, no matter what circumstances we may face. To put our confidence in anything or anyone other than Christ is foolish. For there is only One who is truly “Too Big to Fail.”
Father, today I place all of my trust and confidence in You alone. Show me when I seek to rely on anything or anyone other than You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
