“God answered Solomon, ‘Because this was in your heart, and you have not asked for possessions, wealth, honor, or the life of those who hate you, and have not even asked for long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself that you may govern My people over whom I have made you king, wisdom and knowledge are granted to you.’” - 2 Chronicles 1:11-12a
A person once asked G.K. Chesterton, the late 19th and early 20th century writer, philosopher, and Christian apologist this question: “Sir, if you were stranded on a deserted island and you could only have one book, what would it be? Would it be the Bible? Would it be the works of Shakespeare?” Chesterton replied, “Neither of those. I would want a book on boatbuilding.”
It seems that Chesterton, just like King Solomon, understood the value of wisdom. Can you imagine being given a blank check by God? “Fill it in,” God told Solomon. “Tell Me what I should do for you.” The new King of Israel asked for wisdom and knowledge to lead God’s people (2 Chronicles 1:10). Not success, not fame, not a long life – he asked for wisdom to do the job God had called him to do.
God’s response to Solomon’s request tells us a great deal about him. “Because this was in your heart,” God responded…because you appreciate and respect wisdom, “wisdom and knowledge are granted to you.” Think about this…it took wisdom for Solomon to recognize that he needed wisdom from God to rule righteously and justly. He already understood the value of wisdom or he wouldn’t have asked for wisdom above anything else.
In Proverbs 4:3-5 Solomon wrote that when he was just a boy his father had taught him, “Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth (verse 5).” A part of preparing Solomon to follow him on the throne was taking the time to instill in his son’s heart an appreciation for wisdom. Even though we are not ruling an empire, we need wisdom just like Solomon did. We need wisdom to live in a way that brings honor and glory to God.
So, how much do you value wisdom?
Father, I want to value wisdom so that I can live a life that pleases You. Please give me wisdom today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
