The Temple of Our Hearts

June 22, 2023

“So he made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, 'Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father's house into a market!' His disciples remembered that it is written: 'Zeal for your house will consume me.' The Jews then responded to him, 'What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?' Jesus answered them, 'Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.'" - John 2:15-19

In today’s key passage, we witness a powerful demonstration of Jesus' zeal for the house of God. The temple, intended as a holy place of worship, had been turned into a marketplace—a scene of noise, chaos, and distraction. And Jesus, filled with righteous anger, cleansed the temple, symbolically restoring its purpose and sanctity. This act of clearing the temple reveals the depth of Jesus' love for God's dwelling place.

Just as Jesus cared deeply about the physical temple, He also desires to cleanse and restore the temple of our hearts. Our hearts, too, can become cluttered with distractions and impurities that hinder our relationship with God. We may allow worldly concerns, sinful habits, and misplaced priorities to take up residence in our hearts, making them unfit for the presence of God.

So with this in mind, I would encourage each of us to reflect on the state of our hearts. Are there areas where we have allowed worldly pursuits to overshadow our devotion to God? Are there attitudes or behaviors that need to be surrendered and cleansed by His grace? Jesus wants us to invite Him into the temple of our hearts, allowing His divine power to transform and purify us.

Just as Jesus declared that He would raise the temple in three days, He also promises to resurrect and restore our broken hearts. Through His death and resurrection, He offers forgiveness, redemption, and a new beginning. Let us respond to His call by surrendering our hearts to Him, allowing Him to remove anything that hinders our communion with Him.

Dear Lord, today I come before You with a humble heart, recognizing that I have allowed distractions and impurities to enter the temple of my heart. I want to repent of my misplaced priorities and the times I have neglected to honor You as the rightful ruler of my life. Please cleanse me, Lord, and restore my zeal for You that may have grown dim. Help me to prioritize You above all else and to seek Your will in all that I do. In Jesus' name, amen.
