“Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’”
Matthew 7:22-23 (NIV)
I remember experiencing a severe crisis of faith in college.
A classmate by the name of Richard helped me through it. A great preacher and devout disciple, Richard later pastored the church that I attended.
Years later at seminary, I encountered a disheveled man with long hair and a beard sitting on the front porch. He said, “Hello, you don't remember me, do you?” I said, “I'm sorry, I don't believe we've met.”
He said, “It's me, Richard.”
I couldn't believe my eyes! He said, “I've lost my faith. I'm an atheist. I don't believe in God anymore.”
He preached inspiring messages and prayed strong prayers. And yet missed the one thing he needed more than anything else–a living relationship with Jesus.
Maybe you lead a small group, serve those who are in need, or give money to charity, but actions alone don't prove you belong to Jesus.
Serving Jesus without knowing Him personally misses the point. You can do all the right things but still not have a real relationship with God. So Jesus tells you the identifying marker of those who enter His kingdom: “…only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 7:21, NIV)
God cares more about your obedience than empty words or religious activities.
Don't strive–draw near to Jesus. Let your faith show up not in words, but in loving obedience.
Prayer: Father, Thank You for welcoming me into Your kingdom of righteousness, peace and joy. At times, I find it easy to go through the motions without truly connecting with You in close relationship. Teach me what it means to walk with You, Lord, and follow you all my days. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
