“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.”
Proverbs 16:9 (NIV)
As a follower of Jesus, you have been given the best gift you could ever imagine.
It begins here: Jesus has saved you from your sin and forgiven you. You may not understand every theological detail, but you know that God has saved you by His grace, through your belief in Jesus. But Jesus does not stop here.
Unfortunately, however, this is where many believers stop. But you can know and enjoy the fullness of your salvation.
The God who has given you new life promises to guide you in this new life. He loves you and wants to lead you. God gave His Son to die for you and wants to give you wisdom to direct you. Salvation is not just for heaven–it is also for every part of your life now.
The guidance of God through His Spirit is one of the greatest gifts you have received as a follower of Jesus. That is why Jesus told His disciples in John 16:7, “It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.”
How is that possible? Jesus in the flesh–while fully God–was limited by time and space. He couldn’t be in two places at the same time or meet every need simultaneously. He had to sleep. But the Spirit is not limited by the location or time.
This is how today’s verse happens in your life. You may make plans in your heart. But the Holy Spirit guides you from within and establishes your steps. God’s Spirit is not just with you as a believer, He is in you. You cannot get closer than that.
The guidance of the Holy Spirit is truly your greatest gift. You have everything you need to experience the fullness of being close to God this year. Let Him guide you in every step.
Prayer: God, Thank You for the gift of Your Spirit living in me. As I make plans, I trust You to establish my steps. Teach me to listen and obey Your Holy Spirit’s guidance so that my life will bring You glory. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
