Sweet Spot

October 17, 2024

“The end of all things is near. Therefore, be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
1 Peter 4:7-9 (NIV)

One thing that you might know about me is that I love to play golf.

I learned early on that the “sweet spot” is what golfers call the most efficient part of the golf club face. You can swing the club the same way, with the same speed, but a shot that hits the sweet spot will travel much farther and straighter than a shot that doesn’t.

Your life is the same way. You will maximize your fulfillment, enjoyment, and impact when you find your sweet spot. A sweet spot sets you apart and gives you a distinct advantage. When you’re in your sweet spot you will know your gifts, understand your strengths and use those to make the greatest impact possible.

What is your sweet spot? Biblically speaking, that sweet spot is defined in one word–serving. Jesus was in His sweet spot when He was serving others.

In 1 Peter 4:7-9, Peter is giving words of instruction to the church and telling you what you need to do in order to be prepared for what’s ahead. The Apostle Peters says you must be “alert” and “sober-minded” to do the important work of praying and loving others well.

Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding to save a family's reputation. He fed 5,000 desperately hungry people by turning a few loaves and fish into a banquet. He sat down in the dirt and let children play with Him.

Jesus stopped everything He was doing to minister to one woman with a sickness that no doctor could cure. And He stops right now to love you, showing hospitality as He welcomes you into the Father’s presence and prays for you without ceasing (See Hebrews 7:25).

What Jesus came to earth to do–to serve–He has left you on earth to continue. He’s empowered you with His Spirit to serve Him by serving others.

If you want to know whether or not you are in your sweet spot, just start serving, praying and loving others. You’ll find fulfillment and make an impact much greater than you can imagine.

Prayer: Dear Father, Thank You for serving and loving with everything You have. Help me accept that serving is my sweet spot. With those close to me and those I meet, may I live this way too, by Your power, through Your love and for the sake of others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
