So Help Me God

”For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.”
Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

Have you ever wondered why people may take an oath in the United States and finish with the phrase “So help me God”? 

The Military’s Oath of Enlistment ends with, “So help me God.” The Commissioned Officer’s Oath ends with, “So help me God.” Presidents take the Oath of Office and end with, “So help me God.” Why is this phrase used so often when making an oath? 

It’s because sometimes you need the help that only God can give.

Today’s verse is one of the most well-known verses in the Bible about relying upon God’s help: “For I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13, NLT) This phrase is even referred to as a mantra by sports teams and athletes facing a big game or tough competition. But many people miss the real power of this passage. 

When he writes this, the Apostle Paul is imprisoned in Rome. And in verse 12, Paul gives us the reason for his confidence in today’s verse. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.” (Philippians 4:12, NIV)

Contentment isn't found in your possessions—it's found in His presence.

Paul has learned the secret that you can be content, regardless of your circumstances. That is why he can declare in verse 13 that he can do anything through Christ’s strength. 

Your chains may look different from Paul's, but they feel just as real. Whether it be the daily demands of work, family, and finances, or extenuating circumstances like facing a serious illness, the loss of a loved one, or going through a divorce–life’s struggles can leave you beaten and bruised. 

These are the moments where you can say, like Paul, that you can do all things through Christ. With Him beside you, contentment is possible in every season. The path isn't easy, but His strength makes it possible.

When struggle comes, breathe these words: 'So help me, God. Let that remind you that you have instant access to the help that only God can give. It’s only through Jesus’ strength that you can face the relentless trials of life. 

His strength is always available to you…all you need to do is ask. He is for you and will never leave you or forsake you. And through Christ, you can experience the same contentment of Paul. 

Prayer: Dear Lord, Thank You for the help that only You can give. Your strength is enough for me and I trust that You are working in my life, even in the troubling circumstances. I praise You for it, Lord. Help me learn to be content and rely upon You for my strength in every situation. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
