“God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.” Genesis 1:4
God has always separated light and darkness. From the first day of creation, God shone His light into a dark and empty void. In doing so, He forever separated the two. The rising and setting of the sun is a daily reminder that as Christ-followers – God’s light in the world – we must strive to live a holy life. The word “holy” means, to be set apart or separated.
Most of us struggle to live as children of light. We attempt to live in both God’s Kingdom and the world simultaneously. But by God’s standards, such a thing is not possible. He has called His children out of darkness into the kingdom of light. There is no fence to straddle. There is only light and darkness, good and evil, God and His enemy Satan, truth or a lie.
While the eternal position of everyone who has been born again is secured in the Kingdom of Light, we still wake up each day surrounded by darkness. Every day we are faced with choices between light and darkness. How we respond in these moments is evidence of God’s presence and power. Our actions matter because God has appointed us as His agents of mercy and messengers of the gospel. This is why Jesus said, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).”
Is your life a beacon of light in the darkness, or are you trying to live a divided life?
Dear God, I repent of the darkness in my life and turn to Jesus. Please deepen my faith and help me to live in the light of Your presence today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
