Second-Mile Blessing

December 30, 2024

“If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles.”
Matthew 5:41 (NIV)

Have you ever heard the phrase, “going the second mile?” That idea comes from this verse. Jesus teaches about the kind of disciple He’s called you to be.

In the first century, Israel was controlled by the Roman Empire. By law, a Roman soldier could compel a Jewish person to stop any activity and carry weapons or anything else he wanted. And the person had to carry the burden for one mile.

To prepare for this humiliating experience, every Jewish father taught his son to mark off exactly one mile from his house. That boy would walk that mile as many times as it took him until he knew the distance by heart, so he could carry something one mile and no farther. In other words, he would do only what he was required to do.

To the shock of His listeners, Jesus challenges this mindset. He says, “I want you to go over and above that first mile. I want you to do more and give more than you are required to.” Jesus asks you to go above what is expected or convenient.

How can you do this? Jesus equips you to go the second mile. And when you go beyond what is required you please the Lord.

Consider arriving five minutes early instead of 10 minutes late. Maybe it is not only attending church but also beginning to serve in your community. Instead of showing contempt toward a person who has hurt you, you can appreciate and bless them.

As you follow Jesus, He will help you do more than you are required to so you live a life of excellence and example.

It may seem convenient to do the minimum and no more. But God has called you to a life that is above average. And when you go the second mile, He will bless you.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Thank You for going the second mile for me. Thank You for walking with me, helping me carry my burdens each day. Help me go the second mile in every area of my life. May I display not only what I am required to do, but what honors You and others. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
