“Since then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.” - Colossians 3:1
The resurrection of Christ from the dead brought us new life through faith in Him. This new life is the basis for Paul’s statement in Colossians 3:1. Since we have new life, we should set our hearts on things above where Christ is sitting on His throne at the right hand of God the Father.
What “things” did Paul mean? I don’t know that he meant a specific list of things, but instead that our minds just view ordinary things with eternal perspective. It was an exhortation to the Church to live for the eternal, not the temporary. Our jobs, relationships, possessions, and our very lives exist for the glory of God.
Christ is exalted at the right hand of God. He rules and reigns over all things. There is none higher or greater than He. Therefore, we must learn to dwell there with Him. Setting our hearts on the eternal exalts our attitudes, thoughts and goals. It elevates our perspective, allowing us to see past our circumstances and feelings. With this eternal mindset, we not only know that God is working all things together for our good, but we will believe and live it.
On what is your heart set? Is it with Jesus or are you still caught up in the temporary? As a child of God and joint-heir with Christ, your heart belongs with Him, exalted at the right hand of God.
Father, Please forgive me for getting distracted by things that do not matter. Please give me an eternal perspective on all things and at all times. Change my heart and mind, God, so that I become more like Your Son.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
