“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” – John 14:1-6
What Jesus said in today’s key verses is true: there is exactly a zero percent chance of anybody getting to God if they don’t go through Jesus. It is not that you have a little chance or some chance – you have no chance.
At the end of the day, there is only one way to God. If that is true, then we have to draw three conclusions. Let’s look at those conclusions together. We’ll discuss the first conclusion today and we’ll look at the other two tomorrow.
The first conclusion we can draw from the fact that Jesus is the only way to God is that we must see that religious belief is not the way to heaven. One of the consistent threads that runs through every religion in the world is that there is at least one way to God. Beyond that, it is not just religion that gets you to God, but now the thinking is any religion will do.
But the reality is, no matter how religious you are or how sincere you may be in your religious beliefs, if you are not on a one-way street called “Jesus,” you are going to find yourself on the wrong street. Religion is not enough. You need a relationship with your Savior to go to heaven.
I pray you’ll come back tomorrow as we discuss the other two conclusions we can derive from Jesus being the only way to God.
Dear Lord, thank you for dying for me and for making a way for me to go to heaven. Thank you that my ability to spend eternity with you is not dependent on my own actions or works, but that you did everything necessary to bridge the gap between me and the Father. Amen.
