“Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”
Luke 2:11 (NIV)
When was the last time you received that perfect gift?
The gift that you want, need or maybe didn’t even know you wanted or needed, but when it arrives you are thrilled. It’s the gift that requires planning, searching, and thoughtful preparation by the gift giver because it’s a gift just for you.
And when you receive it, you are blown away by the deep care and kindness of that person.
You have a gift that has been planned for you before you were born. A gift prepared exactly to your needs and hopes, and perfect just for you: it is a gift that can be found in the Christmas story. It is found in a word in today’s verse: “Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:11, NIV emphasis mine)
That word “Savior” describes the greatest gift you and I, and everyone before and after us, will ever receive. This word explains what makes Christmas so special to Christians around the world. And this word explains why this gift is for you.
It is not incidental that the first word to describe Jesus is Savior. That’s because the name “Savior” is fundamental to His purpose and mission–and fundamental to your identity and faith.
In today’s verse, something is missing about this baby–His name! You hear “Christ” and “Lord.” Those are titles, not names. But the title “Savior” is the meaning of his name. And He means to powerfully meet you right where you are. That’s why He’s also called Immanuel, God with you. (Matthew 1:23 NIV)
Do you remember what the angel said to Joseph before this baby was born? “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:20b-21 NIV)
Jesus’ purpose and mission are fundamental to your welcome into the family of God and your trust in Him. Your identity and faith rest on this one word–Savior. And He is your Savior.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for Jesus, my Savior. I know You are with me now by Your Holy Spirit. I trust You completely and praise You for Your indescribable gift. Through Jesus’ Name, Amen.
