Living Water

March 13, 2025

“But whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:14 (NIV)

Mexico City is sinking at an alarming rate–up to 12 inches annually in some neighborhoods. The culprit? Twenty million thirsty residents draining the aquifers beneath their feet. But this physical crisis mirrors a deeper spiritual reality we all face.

Every person experiences a spiritual thirst. Perhaps you thirst for a new house, a different job, or better relationships. Maybe you desire pleasure or power. The more you try to quench your thirst on your own, the deeper you sink into discouragement.

Like Mexico City, you keep drawing from empty wells, growing thirstier with every drink.

In today’s verse, Jesus offers you a different kind of water. He promises to both quench your thirst and give you a never-ending supply of peace, rest, power and assurance. “Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:14b, NIV)

This kind of water doesn’t come from material possessions, external circumstances or your own effort. Jesus gives it to you. His Holy Spirit within you becomes an endless source of life and refreshment.

Because Jesus died thirsty, your thirst can be quenched forever. You can receive peace in trials, comfort in the midst of your pain, rest from striving and satisfaction beyond circumstances. Because Jesus said, “I thirst,” you can drink the life-giving water He gives and never thirst again.

Prayer: Father, Thank You for the living water that is Your Son, Jesus. When I seek to satisfy my hunger and thirst in any other way, correct me, Lord. And may I always find refreshment in You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen
