At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’”
Matthew 18:1 (NIV)
How do you measure success?
On one occasion, Jesus’ disciples ask Him that same question and He answers in an unexpected way. We read about this conversation in Matthew 18. “At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, ‘Who, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’” (Matthew 18:1).
Have you ever wondered about your value? Maybe you’ve wondered if the way you serve God is enough. Jesus promises that your success is not attached to what you achieve.
After asking their question, the disciples waited with bated breath. Instead of answering directly, Jesus “...called a little child to him, and placed the child among them” (Matthew 18:2).
“And he said: ‘Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’” (Matthew 18:2).
In Jesus’ time, children were not valued like they are today. They were at the very bottom of society. But Jesus' kingdom places value where the world denies it. He values humility, wide-eyed wonder and child-like trust.
The disciples thought that ultimate success looked like having power and influence. But Jesus knew that a successful kingdom life consists of small things.
Jesus also makes it clear that you need to take action to become great. But, it might not be what you think. It isn’t making more money or buying a new car. Rather, He says. “...unless you change” (emphasis mine). When you grow out of childhood, you often grow out of child-like trust. But Jesus invites you to change and regain the posture and humility of a child.
How do you do that? Accept God’s grace and think of His greatness more than your own. Become amazed at the life and humility of Jesus in the Gospels and allow the Holy Spirit to change you from the inside. When you become like a child, Jesus says you are on your way to becoming truly great in His kingdom.
You don’t need status or to have everything together because you can run to the Father, and trust He’s working all things together. You can rest in Him completely. You will begin to change and experience the confidence of living a great kingdom life.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I want to be humble like a child. Help me sit before You in wide-eyed wonder. Give me the heart of a child so that I might serve You and run to You from a place of humility. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
