“That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.”
1 John 1:1 (NIV)
Around this time of year, you may often hear a Christmas carol called God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. One of the stanzas reads:
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy,
O tidings of comfort and joy
If you look around, it is easy to see hurt, heartache and discord in the world. Where can you look for news of comfort and joy?
Today’s verse reminds us that one of the greatest reasons why Christmas is a joy to the world, not just to Christians, is because Christmas is not really about a mythical figure like Santa Claus or Frosty the Snowman. Jesus is a real flesh and blood human being that was born into this world just like the rest of us.
The Apostle John is one of many eyewitnesses to this reality, having seen and touched Jesus himself. And there is no stronger evidence than an eyewitness. John is swearing a deposition at this moment. He is trying to tell you, “This is real. I’m betting my life on it. And so can you.”
In other words, Christmas is not a “once upon a time” story that is only for the imagination. It is not a fictional story; it is factual history.
And since it is factual history, both Jesus’ existence and His message can be counted on. It means that no matter what else is going on in the world, because of Christmas, you can celebrate Jesus’ presence and victory.
How does this bring you tidings of joy? Because Jesus is real and trustworthy, the weight of sin and guilt is gone and you can experience the relief of forgiveness. Lasting peace displaces a fear of death. Real and true hope settles feelings of anxiousness. You can experience authentic and complete joy in your daily experience.
Today, if you are looking for some joy you can always find it because you can always find Him. Christmas is not primarily a time you give gifts to others. Instead, it is a time to cherish and celebrate the indescribable gift given to you in Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, Thank You for the gift of Your Son. Because I cannot look at you as John did, sometimes I forget just how real you are. You are here, Lord. And You are closer than my next breath. Help me anchor into Your truth, settle in Your Word, and experience the joy You have given me in Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
