“But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”
Matthew 5:22 (NIV)
Calling someone a name may seem harmless, but God takes it very seriously. You are degrading someone who is made in the image of God.
So, is it ever okay to be angry? The Apostle Paul makes it clear in Ephesians, that you can be angry without sin: “Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.” (Ephesians 4:26)
When you allow anger to settle and become “fixed,” you give the devil an opportunity.
Anger is a common human emotion. But, you might ask yourself if you find it difficult to manage your anger? Do you think about an infuriating situation over and over? That is letting your anger settle. Instead, bring your anger before God and others. Jesus said, “Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still together on the way” (Matthew 5:24a). You and I must make things right before it is too late.
Pay attention to any “fixed anger” and don’t allow it to settle in your heart. Remember to respect people made in the image of God even when it seems they don’t deserve it. God will help you be angry without sin.
Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for not treating me as my sins deserve, but for showing mercy. Help me refrain from holding a grudge, and treat others respectfully, even when I’m upset. Help me learn to be angry without sin.
