Hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all offenses.
Proverbs 10:12 (ESV)
Do you ever wonder if God chooses a political viewpoint?
The political divide in our country is becoming greater and greater each day. You may feel frightened thinking about the future of our country. But I want to encourage you today.
God is not political; He is moral. He defines all that is right or wrong. And where the Bible is clear, regardless of our political leanings, is that God expects us to side with His will and ways above all others.
Before the Declaration of Independence, before the Constitution, before the Bill of Rights, the foundation for all law and order was given to us – God’s Word, the Bible. In every political question there is only one viewpoint that really matters, and that is God’s view.
Today’s verse is especially significant because a hateful attitude toward those of other political beliefs stirs up strife. Instead, we must find ways to love others and work with them, even when we disagree. In John 13:35, Jesus tells His disciples that people will identify those who are followers of Christ by the way they show love to one another.
God is not political. He is neither Democrat nor Republican. He doesn’t take a “side” other than His own will and His own glory. As His creation, however, God wants human politics to be seasoned with grace, concern, love for fellow people, and a willingness to work out differences.
In this way others will know we are of God. Don’t try to drag God into your politics. Instead, rise above politics to show your godliness in the way you handle your political beliefs with others.
Prayer: God, Thank You for blessing me by allowing me to live in a country where I can freely express my political beliefs. Help me to show my devotion to Jesus by the way I treat others and speak of my beliefs, especially to those with whom I disagree. Let my kindness, respect and love for all people cause others to see Your love in me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
