If You Owe Taxes, Pay Taxes

October 29, 2024

“Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”
Romans 13:5-7 (NIV)

You can have a clear conscience and the blessing of obedience.

The Apostle Paul clearly states that submitting to governing authorities is not an obligation, but a responsibility. “Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.” (Romans 13:5) In other words, if you want to be a conscientious Christian, you need to submit to governing authorities.

One important function of government is to provide citizens with both security and stability. To do that, resources must be secured. The monetary cost of the freedom you enjoy comes from the taxes you pay. Paying for the government is a part of your God-given responsibility.

Along with paying for the costs of government, Christians are also responsible for participating in government. Christians are to run for public office and to vote. That is not just a civic duty but that is a sacred responsibility. Pray and cast your vote. You can be confident that God will work through your faith and responsibility.

What do you owe the government? Today’s scripture passage reveals that you owe the government not just taxes, but also honor. No one likes to pay taxes. But you don’t have to like paying taxes to do so gratefully and honestly.

Remember that your greatest responsibility is not only to vote, but importantly, to devote your life to Him who died for your sins on the cross. Because when you serve Him, you receive abundant and eternal life, and you’ll receive everything you need to honor both God and government.

Prayer: Father, Thank You for those in authority. You have a purpose for each person and I pray that by Your grace, each one would fulfill Your good purpose for them. Help me honor those in government, and pray for them instead of criticizing. And Lord, most importantly, help me honor You above all. My hope for lasting peace is in You, Lord Jesus. For You alone satisfy me with true and eternal life. I praise You for it, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Bible Reference

Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God’s wrath but also for the sake of conscience.
For because of this you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, attending to this very thing.
Pay to all what is owed to them: taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.
