“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves.”
Romans 13:1-2 (NIV)
This week, news about the election is saturating our screens and our lives. But God gave us His Word long before modern leaders or political parties formed. So, what does He have to say about how Christians should engage with the Government? One thing is clear: God asks you to acknowledge the God-given authority of the government.
In today’s passage, the Apostle Paul confirms that the authority of all governments comes from God. This is true of democracies and dictatorships. But it does not mean that God approves or is responsible for the actions of those leaders who commit genocide or lead unjustly. He is simply affirming that no ruler, dictator, president, or king has authority in and of themselves.
In fact, Jesus said in Matthew 28:18 “…All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18, NIV) When Jesus stood before Pontius Pilot, the Roman governor of Judea, he thought he had Jesus’ life in his hands. But Jesus said this to him, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above…” (John 19:11, NIV) A government leader can use or misuse authority. But all authority comes from God.
That means that every government is in power today because God either established that authority or He allows it to be in place. When you acknowledge God’s order of authority, even if you don’t understand or agree, you align with His purposes.
Your leaders may not acknowledge God, but ultimately, they are His subjects and servants. It is our responsibility to acknowledge our government officials’ God-given authority to serve the people they represent.
So how will you respond the next time the topic of government comes up at the dinner table or at a sports game? Honor, appreciate and pray for your leaders. Trust that He who has established all authority, will guide those in authority.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I’m thankful that all authority in heaven and on earth belongs to You. Give those in government positions the wisdom to lead justly and with integrity. Help them serve the people with understanding and skill. Thank You for each of them and through their efforts or despite them, establish Your Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
