“After listening to the King, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.” Matthew 2:9
When the wise men first saw the star that led them to Jesus, they simply saw it rising. In other words, they saw the star far off in the direction of Israel and they simply kept their eyes on that star until they got all the way to Jerusalem. In Matthew 2:9, however, we learn that the star led them all the way to Bethlehem. The star wasn’t just out in front of them, but it was moving in front of them!
For hundreds of miles, no one would have known they were actually following a star. In fact, had anyone been watching, the movement of a star would have amazed them. But that still didn’t answer the question of why they were following the star. They had found the significance of this particular star through the Word of God. And, somehow, they knew that the Word of God will always lead you to the will of God.
I am sure those Magi never dreamed they would ever follow a star. I don’t know of anywhere in history where it has ever been recorded that anyone else followed a moving star. That star represented the will of God for their lives. They had been making a journey that lasted between one and two years. Their only desire every day was to simply keep their eyes on that star and make their way to it. They had a single focus on that star and somehow they understood it was the will of God for them to go wherever that star was pointing. They were looking for the King of the Jews. Although they didn’t realize it until they met Him, they were looking for Jesus.
This is why these Magi are so relevant to you and to me…because there is one thing that is true about every one of us whether we are believers or unbelievers. Every single day God wants to lead you to Jesus. You were put on this earth to seek Jesus. You were put on this earth to find Jesus. You were put on this earth to love Jesus. God wants to lead each of us to the same place He led the Magi all those years ago. It is His will that we worship His Son.
Dear Lord, I want nothing more than for your Word to lead me to your will. I want my life to look the way you want it to, so I'm asking that you would give me wisdom, discernment, and a desire to read your Word each day as I seek your will for my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
