“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.”
1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)
Did you know that God wants to give you a willing and glad heart?
In 1 Peter 4:10, Peter uses the word, “each,” when addressing his audience. That word, “each,” also means, “every.” This is an all-inclusive statement and God doesn’t leave anyone out. Each one of us is gifted to serve others–especially you.
Serving is not something you have to schedule or go out of your way to do. You can serve God wherever you are. That’s because service is not just what you do; a servant is who you are as a follower of Jesus Christ. Service isn’t just about your actions, it’s also about your attitude. And when you surrender your heart to Jesus, He will bless you with a willing and glad heart to serve.
And your gifts don’t need to look like someone else. When Peter exhorted each one of us to serve, he didn’t know your particular gift or personality. The Word of God simply says, “Each of you is to use your gifts to serve others.” God has given you the exact gifts you need to serve others.
He also works through you when you are willing. God is less interested in your ability and more interested in your availability. When you remember how Jesus served you, serving will become a natural expression of God’s love for you in Christ and who you are in Him.
This is why the psalmist can say in Psalm 100:2, “Serve the Lord with gladness!” God gives you grace to serve others gladly, willingly, and with joy in your heart. Serving then becomes a privilege instead of a requirement. As you serve, watch how God grows a willing and glad heart of service within you.
On this Veteran’s Day, let’s also remember those who served willingly. Service is worthy of honor and today we honor them. Pray with me today for all veterans, that each one would know our nation’s appreciation, and have the grace to integrate into life outside of their military service with wisdom and God’s blessing.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, as a disciple of Jesus, help me serve others joyfully and gladly. Thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit within me, training me to serve and give from the heart of Christ. Thank You also for those who serve our nation. Bless them with peace and draw each one into a relationship with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
