As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace…
1 Peter 4:10 (ESV)
How well do you steward the priceless gift of God’s grace?
Today’s verse teaches us that service is our response as recipients of grace. If you want to steward God’s grace well, here are three questions for you to ask yourself: Where am I serving? Why am I serving? And how can I become a more willing servant?
1. Where am I serving?
Whether you work on Wall Street or in a church, serving God is not a “job” but a lifelong calling. It is not only something you do – serving is who you are. Serving is not just an action; it is an attitude. It is also not confined to a particular location or group of people; you take on the attitude of a servant wherever you are.
2. Why am I serving?
Be motivated by love to serve, do not serve begrudgingly. You serve others out of an overflow of your personal relationship with Christ. Your serving hands reflect servant hearts that have been redeemed and transformed by the Gospel of Truth.
When the Apostle Peter wrote these words to the Church, he knew confidently that God uses the one who is willing. A willing heart is worth more in God’s Kingdom than all the education and talent in the world.
3. How can I become a more willing servant?
Being a good steward of God’s grace begins by first knowing THE Servant, Jesus Christ. When you truly grasp the depth of His sacrificial love, you begin to understand that serving isn’t something you have to do; it is something you get to do.
Serve as Christ Jesus served you, and you will become a good steward of God’s great grace.
Prayer: Jesus, Thank You for showing me what it means to serve others. If anyone deserves to be served, it is You. Yet, You willingly laid down Your rights in order to serve me in the greatest way imaginable–by dying on the cross for my sins. Please deepen my desire to love and serve You by loving and serving others. I want my life to be a display of Your glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
