Devoted To The Teaching

April 25, 2025

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
Acts 2:42 (NIV)

What's the first thing you reach for in the morning?

For most of us, it's our phones. But the early church had a different priority.

Today’s passage refers to the first 3,000 believers who came to faith at Pentecost. And these believers didn't adopt a casual approach to spiritual growth. They didn’t just attend weekly services or catch an occasional sermon. The Bible says they "devoted themselves" to the apostles' teaching.

The Greek word for "devoted" means "to persevere with unremitting care and attention." They were all in, completely committed to understanding and applying Jesus's teachings.

Think about it—these new believers had no New Testament, no Bible apps, no bookstores. Yet they prioritized God's Word with the kind of passion that the Holy Spirit wants to ignite in you. They recognized that spiritual growth isn't automatic; it requires intentional, consistent immersion in truth.

Our culture sometimes treats the Bible as an interesting historical document or a collection of ancient moral stories. But God’s Word is a living revelation that transforms your everyday reality.

Perhaps you’ve read the Bible and wondered if it relates to your experience. God's Word doesn't need us to make it relevant. It is revelation–and therefore always relevant. When you read it, you can experience the kind of vibrant faith that characterized the early church.

Imagine what can change when you approach Scripture with the same devotion as those early believers. This week, challenge yourself to spend 10 minutes each day in God's Word. Don't just read it—absorb it. Let the Word wash over any anxiety, frustration, or care. Write down one observation you make in each passage. Then ask yourself, How does this work? What difference would it make in my life if I put this into practice?

When you become steadfast in God's Word, your faith becomes steadfast in the world.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for giving us Your living, powerful Word. Forgive me for sometimes treating it casually. Rekindle in me devotion like those early believers who hungered for Your truth. Help me prioritize time in Scripture above the many distractions competing for my attention. Transform my mind and heart through Your Word this week. In Jesus’ powerful Name, Amen.
