“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV)
Imagine spending your life savings on your dream home and then watching it crumble right before your eyes.
The Seawatch subdivision in British Columbia was meant to be the pinnacle of luxury living. On the outside, pristine water, evergreen-covered mountains, and million-dollar views dazzled and amazed. But each of those expensive homes now sits empty and completely abandoned. Why?
Because they were built on a sinkhole, and are no longer livable.
Jesus preaches His compelling Sermon on the Mount and concludes by naming two types of people. Their difference is not necessarily in their morality but in their willingness to follow instructions. Jesus wasn’t talking about construction techniques. He was talking about the way you build your life.
And that one delineation–how you respond to God’s Word–determines the strength and durability of your life. You can feel the devastation of collapse or experience the relief and confidence of building a strong foundation.
In other words, your response to the Word of God determines whether you stand or fall.
Jesus says both builders hear His teaching, but only one of them heeds it. Both builders look at the word and listen to the Word–but only one of them lives it out. You become a wise builder through daily, faithful obedience.
How do you practice Jesus’ teaching in your financial decisions, business dealings, disappointment or family tension? The difference is not knowledge of the Scripture but application.
Renew your commitment to practice Jesus’ teaching each day. The Holy Spirit provides guidance and instruction every moment–even if you must begin again each morning. No matter where you are in your building project with God, it’s never too late to establish a firm foundation.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I praise You for Word. Lead me to build my life on the solid foundation of your Word. You said that the builder is wise who puts your Word into practice–so help me do that, Lord. Thank You for instructing and leading me, Jesus’ Name, Amen.
