Ambition

September 6, 2024

“But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

Did you know that when you follow Jesus, fulfillment finds you?

In life, ambition, or, “a striving for honor, recognition, and preferment,” is usually considered a positive trait. In fact, many experts at achieving wealth or success may tell you that ambition is the key ingredient. What is ambition? Ambition is striving for the sake of distinguishing ourselves from other people. That sounds pretty important for garnering a promotion or pulling ahead for recognition. But can you be ambitious in your field and also a devoted follower of Jesus?

The Bible indicates that ambition is not on Jesus’ top list of qualities. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus explains the single purpose you are to pursue – you are to seek God’s Kingdom first. You are to honor others above yourself, give glory to God instead of looking for recognition, and prefer others instead of putting yourself first.

And the remainder of the verse explains why: “...and all of these things will be added to you.” When you prioritize Jesus and His kingdom, all your other concerns will be taken care of. Seek Him first, Jesus says, and fulfillment finds you.

What are “all these things” that will be added to you? Just before this verse, Jesus has instructed His followers not to worry about food or clothing. Jesus says that when you seek Him first, you don’t need to worry about having enough. Instead of worry, you can rest in His provision and His Kingdom rule, characterized by righteousness, peace, and joy.

That also means you don’t have to worry about pursuing your own ambition or making a name for yourself. The King already calls you by name and has given you a special place and purpose in His Kingdom. As you glorify God with your gifts and talents, you will exchange striving and self-promotion for joy and fulfillment, partnering with Him to bring His Kingdom to earth.

All the money in the world can’t buy you the peace and joy that you will find in the Lord.

Seek Jesus first, growing more like Him. This will bring glory to God, fulfillment to you, and righteousness, peace, and joy to the world around you.

Prayer: God, thank You for my talents and abilities. Remind me that everything You have given me is for Your glory. Help me seek You first, and bring Your Kingdom of righteousness, peace, and joy to all of my relationships. Help me grow to be more like Jesus in all ways, every day. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
