“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He Who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” Isaiah 46:4

One way that you can overcome anxiety and worry today is to remember the past. God knows we tend to worry, and throughout the Bible He is reminding us that reviewing the past helps us in the present.

In Deuteronomy 1:30-31, Moses reminds the people, “The Lord your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as He did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the wilderness. There you saw how the Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” When the people of God were in the desert, worried about food and water and shelter, Moses reminds them of what God has already done. He brought them out of Egypt, destroyed Pharaoh’s army, and provided for them daily with manna and water. The past was proof of God’s future provision.

When you worry, look to your own past. Take a trip down memory lane. How has God provided for you? If you are a Christ follower then you know that Jesus died and rose again for you, forgiving your sins and giving you a place in Heaven. He has already provided for your greatest need. And you’re here right now reading these words. You have air in your lungs, sight in your eyes, a mind to comprehend what you are reading. All of these are gifts from God and provision for your life this very day. Yesterday is a great reminder of the sustaining gifts of God in our lives.

God also reminds us He is already thinking about our future. Isaiah 46:4 says, “Even to your old age and gray hairs I am He, I am He Who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.” When we come to the end of our earthly lives, God says He will still be taking care of us.

When you are worried about the problems of today, you can look to yesterday, and look to tomorrow, and in both places, you will see and know the provision of God for you. Yesterday is proof that your trust in God is wise. Tomorrow proves your trust in God will be rewarded. So today set your worry aside and trust in the God of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

God, thank you for Your provision in my life in the past. Thank you for sustaining my life, giving me my relationships, my health, a place to live, food to eat, and a mind to think. Even if I have challenges today, reminder me that each day is a gift, and I stand today on the countless gifts you have given me throughout my life to this moment. Let me trust You more to sustain me and provide for me today, and not to worry, for I know You care for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
